New Day for Immigration Demonstration Brings Awareness to Capitol Hill

Hundreds demonstrated their support for just and fair immigration policy reform

On January 21st, The Resurrection Project joined our partners from the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refuge Rights along with other partners and allies from across the country in celebrating a "New Day for Immigration".  Hundreds of immigrants met in Washington, D.C. to take part on this national effort to push for comprehensive immigration reform forward taking advantage of the national spotlight brought by the historical inception of this new administration.

The demonstration started by an action outside the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) headquarters with participants, hailing from all over the country, waving flyers that read, "Reform Not Raids."

Congressman Luis Gutierrez (IL)

At the closing of the demonstration, a community forum took place. Here Congressman Luis Gutierrez (D-IL), among others elected officials and community leaders, experienced first hand accounts of those victims of our current immigration laws. Those victimized individuals shared their personal struggles with the hopes of influencing that much needed policy reform.

TRP’s community organizer Fernando Martinez was among those community leaders expressing their solidarity with the immigrant populations. “I hope that with Obama and his new administration, we can reach fair and just immigration reform and stop the separation of hard working families in our communities"

The Resurrection Project is aware of the need for just, humane, and comprehensive immigration reform. Considering the positive new energy the nation is experiencing as the new administration settles in, TRP job is to continue establishing immigration as a major issue, a priority that should be tended by the new administration on the next months ahead.
