Elev8 aims at improving student performance through a holistic child development agenda that considers the many different obstacles families face in our community. A significant obstacle preventing families getting the health care they need is lack of financial resources; therefore, preventable situations that are not dealt with until they turned into an emergency. Elev8 seeks to mend this gap in services by providing more free access to health services through a new health center located on the grounds of Orozco Community Academy. Parents now should be able to take advantage of the free medical services offered, including the physical exams and immunizations needed for their kids to remain in school. 

Orozco Academy will count with 3 examination rooms, a crisis center and a group counseling center all staffed by Alivio Medical Center.

“It has been proven that healthy students demonstrate better attendance and academic performance in school” said Luis Bermudez, TRP’s Elev8 manager. “Poor health can affect learning as bad grades sometimes are the product of missing school days, not turning in homework and falling behind in the class, all due to sickness, or lack of access to affordable medical services”.  To help keep children healthy at Orozco, Alivio Medical Center—our main partner in the implementation of Elev8’s health initiative—will bring the capacity necessary to run the health center. Elev8 is also collaborating with the Illinois Department of Human Services to provide free dental cleanings to all students. Any case needing special dental attention will be referred to Alivio Medical Center for further treatment. 

TRP recognizes the importance of increasing awareness among parents that good health is imperative in the development of their children.  As the lead agency in Pilsen for Local Initiatives Support Corporation’s New Communities Program, we are very excited about opening Orozco’s health center. As we move forward to implement and establish Elev8 initiatives for Pilsen, we would keep you informed on any significant progress as it develops.
