Elev8: A School-Community Partnership

TRP is heading up one of 5 Elev8 (formerly known as Integrated Services in Extended-Day Schools) projects across the City of Chicago.  These Elev8 partnerships, leveraged through the New Communities Program of LISC Chicago and with the support of Atlantic Philanthropies, are working to create a new model for middle schools that will enhance academic support as well as provide holistic family social services.

From February to May 2007, TRP led a comprehensive planning process that included over 50 individuals from Jose Orozco Academy, Alivio Medical Center, Pilsen Neighbors Community Council, and a variety of other neighborhood and city-wide organizations.  Through this process, the team established the means by which it will enhance and expand the educational and social amenities that Orozco Academy will offer its students and families.  These include:

  • Structured learning environment during out-of-school hours on weekdays and during weekends
  • Enhanced learning support and academic enrichment
  • Parent and family social supports, including public benefits access
  • In conjunction with Alivio Medical Center, establish an on-site school-based health center for students
