Building Partnerships between Schools and Communities: TRP at the 2nd Community Resource Expo
TRP's Program Coordinators Israel Vargas and Financial Services Counselors Oliver Marquez
On Tuesday, February 26 The Resurrection Project was present, along with other community based organizations and more than 200 students, at the 2nd Community Resource Expo. The event, sponsored by Chicago Public Schools and designed to provide high schools student across the city with information about programs geared to enhance their chances at becoming involved in anything from after school programs, counseling, healthcare, and scholarship opportunities, proved to be very successful.
Approximately 1,000 teachers, administrators, and counselors from across the city brought their youth to the UIC Pavillion on this day in an effort to help the youth on identifying and begin building relationships with external organizations that will collaborate with their schools in implementing additional programming either during school or after school.
“Oliver Marquez and I had a table in which we were able to talk to countless students about our programs, and shared information with over 25 organizations” said Israel Vargas, TRP’s Program Coordinator. Those in attendance were able to learn more about what we do as an organization, the positive impact we have in our community and about our opportunities to get involved such as the New American Initiatives Citizenship Workshops and Resurrection Basketball League. The audience was also exposed to our La Casa project, which would be the first multi-university student residencies in the nation, and seeks to promote higher education in our underserved community.
As The Resurrection Project is committed to promote those values necessary to bring positive change to our community, and recognizing the value of an education as one important building block in the creation of healthy communities, expect more similar events in the near future.
