From TRP Tenant to Grateful Owner: The Journey of a Hard Working Single Mother

On December 7th, a longtime TRP tenant from Casa Sor Juana realized her goal of becoming a homeowner despite all the odds she had to endure. The day she signed her contract for one of our single family homes marks the conclusion of the long hard journey she faced for over a decade.

This divorced single mother of four children saw herself in a very difficult situation when she was looking for housing. During that time she was struggling to keep her family together. Luckily her parents were living in the neighborhood and took her in with her children. This arrangement was supposed to last only for a few months as she was able to get back on her feet.  Months turned into 5 years and through that time family relationships were deteriorating.

Being in the neighborhood, she learned about the work of The Resurrection Project and came to our doors seeking assistance. Around this time we opened available rental units at Casa Sor Juana and she found an opportunity to move her family into the comforts of a place they could finally call home. She was very grateful about this.

As a TRP tenant, she enrolled in college and was able to attain a Bachelor’s Degree to become a teacher. She defied all odds while caring for 4 children, she found employment and started to think about the future. A future in which she envisioned having her own home but with a teacher’s salary she was turned down frequently as nothing was affordable for her.

She then found out about our homeownership opportunities and started attending our homeownership workshops. She first applied for Resurrection Homes in August 2006 and our counselors advised her on what was needed in order to make this dream a reality.  Finally, on December 7th, 2007 that struggle for advancement paid off as she signed our Resurrection Home contract.

She was extremely emotional and excited as she signed her contract. As she left TRP a huge smile took over her face, radiating gratitude for all TRP has done to help her accomplish her dream of homeownership. We will keep you posted as her home is being constructed.
