Learn Best Practices!

The NCLR conference offers a wide variety of opportunities for improving your skills at the work place and beyond. The Resurrection Project is actively involved on the following workshops:

Strengthening the Hispanic American Family workshop

Attend the Strengthening the Hispanic American Family, a free workshop on Sunday July 26th at 1:30pm (ROOM W187A) where TRP and the other winning organizations of the 2009 NCLR/Annie E. Casey Foundation Family Strengthening Awards will present their exemplary programs and share their holistic approaches to family-strengthening. Their proven approaches to overcoming the specific challenges confronting Latino families will guide workshop attendees in determining worthwhile objectives and implementing programs that best meet the needs of their own family-strengthening plans. Award winners will help you to:

  • Identify the family-strengthening initiatives that best fit your organization

  • Learn about holistic approaches to family-strengthening and explore opportunities for strategic partnerships

  • Adapt existing or develop new family-strengthening programs

A Brochure is Not Enough: Educating Latinos Through One-on-One Financial Counseling

Attend A Brochure is Not Enough: Educating Latinos Through One-on-One Financial Counseling, a free workshop on Tuesday July 28th at 10:30am (ROOM W187A). This workshop considers the current state of household debt, loan delinquencies, and bankruptcy filings on the rise, and how more and more people are finding it imperative that we improve financial literacy among consumers. However, research has shown that broad financial literacy programs do not translate into positive change in a family’s financial stability. This is especially true for Latinos and immigrants, who are often steered toward predatory car loans, mortgages, and credit cards in spite of such interventions. In this workshop, panelists will explore a new method for creating financially informed consumers: financial counseling. Research and practical experience demonstrate that individualized financial advice can set families on the path to truly improving their fiscal health. Participants will:

  • Understand the need for low-cost financial advice in modest-income communities

  • Learn about successful community-based financial counseling models

  • Discuss advocacy strategies for promoting financial counseling programs
